The secret arts and mysteries of Freemasonry are concealed within the allegories and symbolism of alchemy. The purpose of the Great Work, or Magnum Opus, is not merely instruction nor moral improvement, but the transmutation of consciousness and the elevation of humanity. This process is expressed through universal images: lead transformed into gold, the rough ashlar refined into the perfect stone, or the rejected stone raised as the chief cornerstone. “Be ye transformed by renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2 AKJV). The Greeks used the word “metamorphousthe” or metamorphosis, which means inner nature is altered, or identity is renewed. Transformation is the change of form, condition or behavior, such as learning new habits or moral improvements. Transmutation is a change of the state and quality of being. To seek more light is to undertake the interior work of purification, wherein WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING unite in UNITY as the means of transmutation.
The goal is to spiritualize the material and materialize the spiritual—the elevation of matter through consciousness and the embodiment of spirit through action. To spiritualize the material is to refine instinct, passion and habit, into virtue, awareness, and meaning. To materialize the spiritual is to bring intention, order, and attention into the body, emotions and daily conduct. This is where bringing order out of chaos comes into place. The Great Work truly begins when conscious action reshapes the world by spreading faith, hope and charity.
