Arthurian Legend is vast, so this issue will focus on characters whose stories are most relatable to the masonic experience. King Arthur and his utopian city of Camelot remind us of the universality of the craft and parallels the lodge and its Master. Percival, the seeker and warrior of light, is a mirror of the candidate for initiation, and his quest for the Grail reflects our journey for enlightenment. Merlin, and his crucial roles as magician, initiator, mentor & advisor, and builder of Stonehenge helps to situate the many offices of the lodge in their mythical context. The search for the Grail is explored as a metaphor for the pursuit of light. Finally, the knight Lancelot offers a window into the knight’s code and its parallels to the burdens and responsibilities we take on as masons, as well as the pitfalls of failing to live up to them. These stories illuminate the mythical matrix that bolsters and gives depth to our initiatic traditions and the lessons we are taught; may their wisdom (and ability to entertain) be the wellspring of enjoyment for you that it has been for me.
