Not every man is cut out to be a Mason; and not every lodge is right for every man who should be made a Mason. We say we take good men and make them better. Not that we can take just any man and hope to make him better. This means that each man entering our lodge should already have a sense of balance in his life; a willingness to improve himself and a desire to serve the community around him. If a lodge is willing to invest its time and efforts to do the work, the candidate himself must be ready to commit to the same for the lodge—and, most importantly, to his own improvement. This essential act of vetting our prospects is called Guarding the West Gate and it is the central focus of our November issue.
